Maria Teresa Ronderos is the director of the Program on Independent Journalism at Open Society Foundations, which supports journalism enterprises all over the world, particularly in those places where free independent information is scarce and the digital revolution has opened new opportunities for quality journalism to flourish. Before joining OSF, she was editor-in-chief at VerdadAbierta.com, a website that has covered armed conflict in Colombia since 2008. She also served in different position at Semana, Colombia’s leading news magazine. She received the Journalist of the Year Simon Bolivar Award in 2014 for the impact of her book, Guerras Recicladas, a history of the paramilitary forces in Colombia. She was a member of the board of the 2016 García Márquez Iberoamerican Foundation for New Journalism, and also served the boards of the Committee to Protect Journalists, and Flip, Colombia’s Foundation for Freedom of the Press, where as chair, she worked to protect the lives of journalists in danger. An experienced teacher, Maria Teresa has also received the King of Spain Iberoamerican Award in Madrid and the Maria Moors Cabot Awards from Columbia University in New York.
