As anticipation builds for the 25th anniversary of the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), in-person attendees have an exciting new pre-conference event to sign up for.

On Thursday, April 11, a day before the official start of ISOJ, the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas will host a screening of “Breaking the News,” a documentary that follows the story of a group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists who launched the groundbreaking nonprofit digital news startup The 19th* as a way to include those whose voices have traditionally been excluded from mainstream media coverage.

Following the 99-minute screening, stay for a Q&A session with Emily Ramshaw, co-founder and CEO of The 19th*, and moderator Sonal Shaw, CEO of The Texas Tribune.

The screening and accompanying Q&A session will take place Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in UT Austin’s Moody College of Communication at 300 W Dean Keeton. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required. Reserve your spot today!

“One of the most important inflection points for us… as you will see in the film, is that we expanded that conversation, which was mainly centered on women, to talking about LGBTQ folks in this country, thinking about the intersection of race and gender in this country,” said Errin Haines, editor at large of The19th*, which is supported by a mix of membership, philanthropy and corporate underwriting. 

The documentary screening kicks off the 25th anniversary of ISOJ, which is two days packed with dozens of speakers from all over the world, panels, workshops, networking opportunities and more.
