En reconocimiento de los desafíos que el periodismo latinoamericano enfrenta a raíz de los rápidos cambios tecnológicos, los gobiernos hostiles a la prensa y la inestabilidad económica, el 18º Coloquio Iberoamericano de Periodismo Digital, que se celebrará el 29 de marzo en la Universidad de Texas en Austin, incluirá sesiones sobre la práctica del periodismo en el exilio, la sostenibilidad de los medios de comunicación y la investigación sobre el estado del periodismo en toda la región.

El Coloquio, que se realizará íntegramente en español al día siguiente de ISOJ, se centra en la libertad de prensa y la innovación periodística en toda Iberoamérica. El Coloquio de este año, organizado conjuntamente por el Centro Knight para el Periodismo en las Américas y el Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos Teresa Lozano Long de la Universidad de Texas en Austin, es posible gracias al apoyo de Google News Initiative y el Fondo Internacional para los Medios de Interés Público (IFPIM, por sus siglas en inglés).

El programa de este año cuenta con 25 oradores de nueve países de las Américas.

La periodista venezolana Luz Mely Reyes, cofundadora y directora del sitio de noticias independiente nativo digital Efecto Cocuyo, pronunciará el discurso magistral “Reinventarse en el exilio: El viaje de los periodistas venezolanos en Estados Unidos”.

Periodistas nicaragüenses exiliados hablarán sobre los desafíos de informar fuera de su país de origen en un panel moderado por Carlos Lauría, director ejecutivo de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa, quien también hará un anuncio especial.

Además del periodismo en el exilio, las presentaciones del Coloquio también destacarán los esfuerzos para apoyar a los medios de comunicación latinoamericanos. Vanina Berghella, directora para América Latina y el Caribe de IFPIM, presentará los resultados de las subvenciones otorgadas a medios latinoamericanos, y representantes de SembraMedia ofrecerán información sobre las tendencias y las mejores prácticas para la sostenibilidad de los medios.

Parte de lo que hace que el Coloquio sea único es la forma en que combina la práctica del periodismo con la investigación académica. Dos paneles incluirán investigadores que presentarán sus estudios sobre el periodismo latinoamericano.

El Coloquio también presentará un resumen de proyectos periodísticos especiales en América Latina que explorarán todo tipo de temas, desde la inteligencia artificial hasta los reportajes de investigación innovadores y los ataques a los periodistas.

“Los últimos años han traído muchos desafíos para el periodismo independiente en América Latina: desde trabajar en el exilio hasta sufrir persecución legal y ataques digitales”, dijo Teresa Mioli, gerente editorial del Centro Knight. “Pero también hemos visto la resiliencia de los periodistas que sirven como ejemplos globales de narrativas innovadoras y sostenibilidad. El Coloquio de este año será una vez más un espacio para compartir nuestros éxitos y aprender unos de otros”.

18th Iberoamerican Colloquium on Digital Journalism spotlights exile journalism, sustainability, and more. Register today!

In recognition of the challenges to Latin American journalism brought on by rapidly changing technologies, governments hostile to the press, and economic instability, the 18th Iberoamerican Colloquium on Digital Journalism, March 29 at the University of Texas at Austin, will feature sessions on practicing journalism in exile, sustainability of media outlets and research on the state of journalism throughout the region.

The complete program and list of speakers for this special event, which is open to all registered participants of the 26th International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), are now available. Register today to attend the Colloquium in person or virtually!

The Colloquium, conducted entirely in Spanish and held the day after ISOJ, focuses on press freedom and journalism innovation throughout Iberoamerica. Co-organized by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and UT Austin’s Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, this year’s Colloquium is made possible thanks to the support of Google News Initiative and the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM).

This year’s program features 25 speakers from nine countries in the Americas.

Venezuelan journalist Luz Mely Reyes, co-founder and director of independent, digital-native news site Efecto Cocuyo, will deliver the keynote address “Reinventing oneself in exile: The journey of Venezuelan journalists in the United States.”

Exiled Nicaraguan journalists will speak to the challenges of reporting outside their home country in a panel moderated by Carlos Lauría, executive director of the Inter American Press Association, who will also make a special announcement.

Besides exile journalism, Colloquium presentations also will highlight efforts to support Latin American media. Vanina Berghella, director for Latin America and the Caribbean of IFPIM, will showcase results of the grants given to Latin American outlets, and representatives from SembraMedia will offer insights into trends and best practices for the sustainability of media.

Part of what makes the Colloquium unique is the way it blends the practice of journalism with academic scholarship. Two panels will include researchers presenting their studies on Latin American journalism.

The Colloquium also will spotlight a roundup of special journalistic projects in Latin America that will explore everything from artificial intelligence to innovative investigative reporting and attacks on journalists.

“Recent years have brought many challenges for independent journalism in Latin America – from working in exile, to suffering legal persecution and digital attacks, “said Teresa Mioli, editorial manager at the Knight Center. “But we’ve also seen the resilience of journalists who serve as global examples of innovative storytelling and sustainability. This year’s Colloquium will once again be a place to share our successes and learn from each other.”
