At the 15th International Symposium on Online JournalismPolicyMic Editor-in-Chief Jake Horowitz said that contrary to common belief, young people are interested in news.

According to Horowitz, the real issue is the media not connecting with millenials.

“Mainstream media can do a lot more to empower my generation,” Horowitz said.

According to Horowitz, millenials want a different news format from what their parents prefer. He cited Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” as an example of a format that connects with young people.

Horowitz, a Stanford University graduated born in 1987, co-founded PolicyMic — a news site for young people. He said that high page views on PolicyMic stories about Ukraine and #SochiProblems show that young people are in fact interested in the news.

“There’s no one right way to tell a story,” Horowtiz said.

Going forward, Horowitz said PolicyMic will incorporate data visualization into its content in the coming year.
