Second video in ISOJ Time Machine series revisits old concerns with new technologies

In her presentation at the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ) in 2002, the late MJ Bear, then-new media consultant, American University adjunct professor and former NPR Vice President for online operations, emphasized the significance of the internet for journalism while stressing its disadvantages.

“One of the great things about the internet, bringing new ways to communicate with audiences, is probably also one of the biggest downfalls–technology is one of our downfalls,” she said.

Fast forward to today, and Bear’s words have taken on a new sense of urgency. The rise of technologies like artificial intelligence and social media have both facilitated and complicated the journalism landscape.

In the second installment of our ISOJ Time Machine video series, in which we highlight what journalism leaders had to say about technology during previous ISOJ conferences, we go back to 2002 and 2003, showing that topics of debate then remain relevant today, more than two decades later.

En su presentación en el Simposio Internacional de Periodismo Online (ISOJ) en 2002, la fallecida MJ Bear; entonces consultora de nuevos medios, profesora adjunta de la American University y exvicepresidenta de operaciones en línea de NPR; enfatizó la importancia de internet para el periodismo al tiempo que destacó sus desventajas.
