Sérgio Dávila is the editor-in-chief of Folha de S.Paulo, the leading newspaper in Brazil. He succeeded Otavio Frias Filho (1957-2018), founder of modern Folha and shareholder of the company, who died prematurely five years ago.
Before that, Sérgio served as executive-editor of the newspaper from 2010 to 2019. Previously, he spent a decade as correspondent for the paper in the United States, first in New York and then in California and Washington DC. His award-winning coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 became a book, “Nova York – Antes e Depois do Atentado” [NYC: before and after the attack], (Geração, 2002).
Sérgio was also the only Brazilian reporter to cover the war in Iraq directly from Baghdad, which earned him the 2003 Esso Reporting Award and other awards, and served as basis for the book “Diário de Bagdá – A Guerra do Iraque Segundo os Bombardeados” [Baghdad Diary: the War in Iraq according to the bombing victims] (DBA, 2003).
Sérgio is a former Knight Fellow at Stanford University (2004-2005) and is the recipient of several awards for reporting and editing in Brazil.
