Kathleen McElroy is associate director and a senior lecturer in the School of Journalism at University of Texas at Austin. She was a Harrington Doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas and received her doctorate in journalism in 2014. Her research has focused on the intersection of race and news media, including sports journalism as a cultural lens on race.

She previously spent 20 years as an editor at The New York Times, where she served as an Associate Managing Editor, Deputy Editor of the Continuous News Desk, Deputy Sports Editor and Dining Editor. She also worked at The National, Newsday and the Austin American-Statesman.

She received a master of arts from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and a bachelor of arts from Texas A&M.

McElroy will chair the Research Panel: “Diving deep into the layers of journalism, the journalism practice and its audiences at ISOJ 2017 (April 22 at 2:15 p.m.)
