ISOJ 2025 to be hosted in historic building at the University of Texas at Austin

The historic Shirley Bird Perry Ballroom at the University of Texas at Austin, which has hosted important U.S. figures like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Frank Sinatra, is the new venue for the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ).
From March 27 – 28, 2025, hundreds of media executives, journalists, scholars and students from around the world will meet in this storied building to discuss the future of journalism.
For 25 years, ISOJ has helped lead the conversation on how digital technologies are reshaping the journalism field. It’s fitting, then, that the 26th annual conference will be held in a historic building with its own stories to share.
The nearly 100-year-old Texas Union officially opened in 1933 and was designed in the style of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Look beneath your feet and see the hard maple floor has a circular pattern designed for roller skating.
Named for a former UT Austin administrator, the ballroom recalls great moments in Texas history.
In the 30s and 40s, the ballroom was big enough to accommodate all of the university’s 4,000-5,000 students (UT now has 53,000 students), and a dance was held every day at noon–that is, until the faculty petitioned for the dances to be stopped since students were cutting classes to boogie in the ballroom.
The ballroom also has seen its fair share of historic figures.
Because the University of Texas was the southern anchor for the Big Band circuit, the ballroom has played host to famous musicians like Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Glen Miller.
And Martin Luther King, Jr., the most famous U.S. civil rights leader, delivered the speech “Civil Liberties and Social Action” in the ballroom in March 1962.
Today, the Texas Union, which houses the ballroom, is a center of student life. It has a bowling alley, numerous fast-food restaurants, a live music venue and bar–all of which will make it easy for ISOJ-ers looking for a little post-conference food or entertainment.
The Union has a profound and important history, and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, which organizes ISOJ, is excited to keep that tradition alive with cutting-edge discussions about where the journalism industry is headed.

ISOJ 2025 se celebrará en un edificio histórico de la Universidad de Texas en Austin
El histórico salón Shirley Bird Perry de la Universidad de Texas en Austin, que ha acogido a importantes personalidades estadounidenses como Martin Luther King Jr. y Frank Sinatra, es la nueva sede del Simposio Internacional de Periodismo Online (ISOJ).
Del 27 al 28 de marzo de 2025, cientos de directivos de medios de comunicación, periodistas, académicos y estudiantes de todo el mundo se reunirán en este histórico edificio para debatir sobre el futuro del periodismo.
Durante 25 años, el ISOJ ha contribuido a liderar el debate sobre cómo las tecnologías digitales están reconfigurando el campo del periodismo. Así pues, resulta apropiado que esta 26 conferencia anual se celebre en un edificio histórico con sus propias historias por compartir.
El Texas Union, de casi 100 años de antigüedad, se inauguró oficialmente en 1933 y fue diseñado al estilo de la arquitectura renacentista española. Si miras bajo tus pies, verás que el suelo color maple tiene un patrón circular diseñado para el patinaje sobre ruedas.
Nombrado en honor de un antiguo administrador de UT Austin, este salón de baile ha sido testigo de grandes momentos de la historia de Texas.
En los años 30 y 40, el salón era lo suficientemente grande como para albergar a los entre 4 mil y 5 mil estudiantes de la universidad (UT tiene ahora 53 mil estudiantes), y en él se celebraba un baile todos los días al mediodía, hasta que el profesorado pidió que se suspendieran los bailes, ya que los estudiantes se saltaban las clases para acudir a bailar a este recinto.
El salón de baile también ha sido testigo del paso de personajes históricos.
Dado que la Universidad de Texas era el ancla sureña del circuito de la Big Band, el salón de baile ha acogido a músicos famosos como Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James y Glen Miller.
Y Martin Luther King Jr., el más famoso líder de los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos, pronunció el discurso “Libertades civiles y acción social” en este salón de baile en marzo de 1962.
Hoy, el edificio Texas Union, que alberga el salón de baile, es un centro de vida estudiantil. Cuenta con una pista de boliche, numerosos restaurantes de comida rápida, un local de música en vivo y un bar, todo lo cual facilitará a los asistentes a ISOJ la búsqueda de un poco de comida o entretenimiento después de la conferencia.
