It’s All About Interacting: Perspectives from Abroad on Online Journalism

Readers want interaction, no matter where they live.  Ismael Nafria, the Content Deputy Director of Prisacom/El.Pais.com from Spain knows his readers. So did the other international panel of speakers from France, Brazil, and Colombia, who spoke at the 8th International Symposium on Online Journalism held at The University of Texas at Austin.

As a journalist with a specialty in the Internet, communication and new technology, Nafria explained that using video, audio and text to tell a story is what makes EL.PAIS.com so popular.

“We are trying to create an informative offer. To offer users what’s important for that moment and what’s important for the users,” Nafria said.

One new way that El.PAIS.com communicates with its readers is with a blog called Yo Periodista. Users can participate in any subject that they want to discuss.

“This way we can work more journalistically with our users,” Nafria said.

The successful integration of blogs, online forums, chats and videos on news pages has racked up more than 18,000 user inputs daily and seven million unique users per year.

“We are very happy with these numbers,” Nafria said.
