The International Symposium on Online Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin is now welcoming full papers for the 2018 #ISOJ themed issue! Manuscripts accepted will be published in the #ISOJ journal and authors will be invited to present their research at the 2018 ISOJ.

‘Habits of Thought’

The practice of journalism has been in constant flux for 20 years and more. Change has been dramatic and, for many journalists, traumatic. New technologies, tools and platforms have necessitated sweeping changes in the ways journalists report, write, edit and publish information.

New software has put detailed audience data quite literally in journalists’ faces, and new data-savvy newsroom colleagues communicate in entirely different languages.

These and related novelties affect the newsroom in ways that are readily visible and relatively easily described – by journalists and journalism scholars alike. Taken cumulatively, they suggest wholesale changes in “habits of practice.” How journalism is done today is undeniably different from how it was done 20 or 10 or even five years ago.

But what about “habits of thought”? Have journalists changed the ways in which they think about what they do or why they do it? What, if any, shifts can be identified in their deeply ingrained beliefs about their role in democratic society; their relationship to audiences, sources and peers; or the normative principles that guide their decisions? How do contemporary journalists think about contemporary journalism – about what it is, what it is not, what it might become and what it should never be?

#ISOJ Journal, the official research publication of the International Symposium on Online Journalism, is seeking manuscripts for a special issue on this topic, to be published in conjunction with the next ISOJ symposium in April 2018.

All submitted manuscripts will undergo a blind review process, and the authors of those articles selected for publication also will be invited to present their work at the symposium.

Empirical work, either quantitative or qualitative (or both), is especially desired, though non-empirical work that contributes substantively to our knowledge of how journalists think about themselves and their occupation also will be considered. Scholarship that goes beyond description to consider sociological, epistemological, ontological or other conceptually rich understandings of journalists’ perceptions of —change will have the greatest likelihood to be selected for publication.

Manuscript Requirements
• Only full papers, written in English, will be accepted for consideration.
• Manuscripts should be no more than 8,000 words, including references, and should be formatted using APA citation style.
• Authors also should provide a separate title page containing a 150-word abstract, a list of up to six keywords, a 100-word biographical sketch, and full contact information of authors.
• No footnotes should be used. Only endnotes are permitted.
• Manuscripts submitted for consideration should not have been previously published or presented previously.
• Tables and images sent in a separate file (high-res gif/jpg quality)
• Multimedia files provided via a Dropbox or Google Drive URL with clear instructions of their placement in the text. (Since the accepted articles will also appear online, a multimedia component is welcomed – video, audio, interactive graphic, etc.) Multimedia components are optional, not required.
• Identification in the text where graphs, tables or multimedia should be placed
• If papers don’t meet aforementioned requirements, they will automatically be disqualified and returned to the author.
• If your article is accepted and you are invited to ISOJ, all travel arrangements must be made by author (plan on two-night stay at minimum).

Timeline:

• Mid-May 2017: Call for Papers issued.
• September 22, 2017: Deadline for manuscript submission, via email to ISOJ research chair: aschmitz@mail.sdsu.edu.
• November 15, 2017: Notification to authors of decision on manuscript, including revision requests for tentatively accepted manuscripts as appropriate.
• December 15, 2017: Deadline for submission of final manuscript.
• Late February 2018 (estimated): Page proofs provided; one-week turnaround for authors.
• April 2018: ISOJ symposium in Austin, Texas, presentation and journal publication.
